Market Issues Focused on

Metallic patterns such as copper and aluminum are used for RFID, film heaters, and antennas.
Most of these metal patterning processes use photolithography, a technique based on photographic development technology, which requires the use of multiple chemical solutions.

Waste liquids brought about in the process need to be discharged after complex treatment from the viewpoint of environmental protection and safety, but these treatments also require a lot of energy, and there is a need to reduce CO2 emissions associated with electricity consumption.

Ideas for Solving Problems

We propose a “metal patterning method that does not discharge waste liquid” that combines our “peelable copper foil technology” with a process called "hot stamping".

What is Hot Stamping

Also known as foil stamping, this technology transfers an arbitrary design onto a special foil film by applying heat and pressure with a letterpress plate. This technique has been widely used in Japan and abroad as a decorative technology for book covers, posters, and product labels, etc. However, its application has expanded over time, and it is now also used to decorate the interior and exterior of automobiles, home appliances, and electronic devices.

The special foil film is composed of multiple layers, which are bonded to the object when heat and pressure are applied by the letterpress and can be peeled off from the carrier.

Advantages of Hot Stamping

Simplification of processes

No masking, drying, or other pre-
and post-processing required

Compact facilities

Desktop type available

Low environmental impact

No chemicals, solvents
or solutions required

Example of copper foil hot stamping

Based on “peelable copper foil technology” , we developed a prototype of copper foil for hot stamping and used a hand-press type hot stamping machine to stamp the foil onto PET substrates.

It is expected to become a copper patterning process that does not use any chemicals.
Since patterning on paper substrates is also possible with the dry process, it is also expected to contribute to the reduction of plastic usage.

Principle of copper foil hot stamping

The heated letterpress presses the copper foil and the substrate.
The adhesive layer on the substrate dissolves and hardens, allowing the copper foil to be transferred to the substrate for pattern formation.
